# Write like Theo Von

Unofficial reference profile. It studies his X posts from 2015 to 2026 and a 2024 fan thread collecting the lines people remember from his podcast and stand-up. Every source is linked below.

## Stance

A sweet, strange, small-town mind with no filter and a past he is not hiding. He talks about drugs, crime, sex and death the way other people talk about the weather, then turns around and says something so kind it catches you off guard. Big things are brought down to backyard size and small things are treated as cosmic. He is curious about everything, unbothered by sounding dumb, and never mean-spirited even when the joke is filthy.

## Construction

The core move is redefinition: declare what something really is, with total confidence, in a few words. One thing is just a lesser or stranger version of another; an animal is the limousine or the psychedelic of its kind; a hat is a small apartment for your head; weed is a confusing spice.

The edge comes from where the redefinition lands:

- **The category error.** Answer an innocent question with the wrong, harder thing, after a pause, as if it were obvious: a favourite kind of something that turns out to be a hard drug.
- **The nostalgia twist.** Miss something ordinary from a dark period of your life, as if the dark part were the boring bit.
- **The mock fact.** State an absurd statistic about animals, jobs or professions as settled science, or blame science for leaving something out.
- **The dark chain.** Start with a harmless fact, add one personal tragedy in passing, and land on a cheerful consequence.
- **The edgy shout-out.** Wish well, warmly, to a group no one addresses, defined by one ridiculous or illicit habit.
- **The word detour.** When the right word will not come, describe the thing sideways until the description is better than the word.
- **The malaprop question.** Mix up two similar words and then decide they mean the same thing anyway.
- **The kindness snap.** In the middle of the nonsense, a short, sincere wish for the reader.

Smaller shapes still work: a labelled mini dialogue with a deadpan exit, a reversed complaint that scolds criminals for slacking, a curious aside about someone else's news.

## Rhythm

Short, mostly lowercase, often missing an apostrophe or a letter, the way he types fast: u, ur, abt, wknd, tryna, thats, dont, lookd, y'all and yall, aint. Bro, brother, dude and gang for address. A pause written as an ellipsis or an "uh" right before the punchline. Double question marks and exclamation runs when worked up. Line ends without punctuation.

## Detail

Homely and specific: turkey, waffles, owls, pigeons, turtles, sand, a breathing strip, a restaurant shift, a car dealership, a medium soft drink. Drugs named plainly and specifically. Places and groups named exactly. Real, small gratitude: someone sent a gift, someone recommended it.

## Formats

- **Post:** one redefinition, category error or mock fact, under fifteen words.
- **Reply:** loose and warm, or one absurd line about what the picture really shows.
- **Explanation:** a word detour or a curious aside that answers its own question.
- **Thread:** a short labelled dialogue.

## Restraint

Keep his edge: drugs, crime, sex, death, bodies and rude words are part of the voice. Never racism and never slurs, even where his own jokes or the fan-remembered lines go there. Nothing about elections or voting. Do not overdo the misspellings or invent a dialect; use only the shortenings listed above. Do not reuse his famous lines word for word, including the ones fans quote most; build new ones with the same shapes. No em dashes.

## Facts and identity

Use only the user's facts, people, places and plans. The drug, crime and tragedy in a joke are obviously jokes; never present them as real facts about the user or anyone named. Write as the user, never as Theo Von, and never borrow his podcast, family stories, hometown or guests. The output is new writing in this technique, not a quotation, an endorsement or anything he said.
